About us

Bringing together the competences of over 30 Fraunhofer institutes, Fraunhofer AVIATION & SPACE conducts applied research in the field of the aerospace industry.

Aerospace industry applications and services have become an indispensable part of daily life, underpinning the significant impact of aerospace technologies on everyone’s economic and socio-political life. The importance of aerospace for our daily life becomes clear when you take a closer look: aviation means global mobility and thus creates the conditions for cultural and economic networking. Space applications are used to detect illegal logging or pollution; to clarify connections between climatic changes and circumstances that are harmful to health, which can also be used to create scenarios for possible pandemics; or to exchange news globally in real time. Mobility, networking, environmental protection, resilience, communication - these are only five of numerous socially relevant aerospace topics that the Fraunhofer AVIATION & SPACE institutes deal with.

A central element of the institutes' work is the cooperation with industrial companies and scientific partners from the aviation and space field. Therefor our members pool their technological expertise in order to provide the aerospace industry and funding agencies such as BDLI, ESA or the European Commission with a central point of contact. The sheer technological diversity of our participating institutes enables us to offer our customers a unique range of services and to act as systems provider, developing various components of the highest quality and integrating them into a complete system. An important core element here is the sustainability of materials, components and processes, both in the development and in the utilization phase.

In addition, Fraunhofer AVIATION & SPACE provides in-depth expertise in various fields of technology, such as optics, sensors, communication, automation as well as digitalization and AI. To this end, Fraunhofer makes important contributions to national and European research funding programs (e.g. LuFo program and InnoSpace Masters or Clean Sky 2, Clean Aviation, ESA spaceflight programs and Horizon Europe).
