Clean Sky

The Clean Sky Joint Undertaking was launched in 2008 and ran until 2018. Fraunhofer was a founding member of this first EU public-private partnership for the development of sustainable aviation technologies. The Clean Sky flagship program was aligned with the EU's sustainability goals set out in the ACARE 2020 roadmap.

In numerous demonstrators, the consortia, organized in six technology areas, developed and validated a large number of new technologies. A simulation network called Technology Evaluator assessed the performance of the developed technologies in areas such as fuel consumption, pollutant and noise emissions, on-board energy management and ecological criteria.

The program has led to a large number of innovations that resulted in a significant reduction of CO₂, NOₓ and noise and sustainably strengthened the international competitiveness of the European aviation industry.
